Call My Bluff Wine Quiz

A team of wine enthusiasts from the Company, led by the chair of our wine committee Nick Hughes and including a special guest Jane Davis, Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths, took part in a Call My Bluff wine tasting. Held in the salubrious surroundings of the Guildhall Club, the event was put together in aid of Pollinating London Together. Founded in 2020 by the Worshipful Companies of Wax Chandlers (or, as our compere for the evening suggested, Wax Chandeliers) and Gardeners, PLT is a charity currently based in London aiming to save urban pollinators by enhancing green spaces for the benefit of all.

Following a sparkling wine reception, the evening began with an ice-breaker in the form of Head or Tails featuring 50/50 questions based on the wine we had just enjoyed (but, instead of placing hands on heads or tails, participants were invited to raise their glass or leave it on the table).  That this was won by our Steward, Lee McLernon, was encouraging for what was yet to come.

The main event of the evening was a competitive blind tasting of 6 wines. For each wine, 3 “experts” eloquently explained what we were drinking and each team then selected whom they thought was telling the truth. As one might expect, members of the Company’s team (named Premier Crew) discussed each wine in depth, arguing their case and voting for their answer (with Nick needing to exercise his casting vote just once). Amidst some stiff competition, the team showed plenty of bottle to come joint second.

An evening thoroughly enjoyed by all involved and benefiting a good cause into the bargain!  Many thanks to Nick for organising.
